What is hypochondroplasia?

Hypochondroplasia is a form of short-limbed dwarfism. This condition affects the conversion of cartilage into bone (a process called ossification), particularly in the long bones of the arms and legs. Hypochondroplasia is similar to another skeletal disorder called achondroplasia, but the features tend to be milder.

All people with hypochondroplasia have short stature. The adult height for men with this condition ranges from 138 centimeters to 165 centimeters (4 feet, 6 inches to 5 feet, 5 inches). The height range for adult women is 128 centimeters to 151 centimeters (4 feet, 2 inches to 4 feet, 11 inches).

People with hypochondroplasia have short arms and legs and broad, short hands and feet. Other characteristic features include a large head, limited range of motion at the elbows, a sway of the lower back (lordosis), and bowed legs. These signs are generally less pronounced than those seen with achondroplasia and may not be noticeable until early or middle childhood. Some studies have reported that a small percentage of people with hypochondroplasia have mild to moderate intellectual disability or learning problems, but other studies have produced conflicting results.

the day that goes on and on my friend

OK so this day has lasted for-ev-ver. I have been a little down lately, no a lot down. After my Nana died last summer it seems everything has gone down hill. Coleman got his growth hormones which is a blessing but a huge burden. A huge responsibility. Then our endocrinologist left the area so we have to find a new one. Carter has had his ups and downs.Dr. Blanton found a tumor on the inside of my leg, have to get it removed, Coleman's tonsils have to come out because he cant breath and it looks like he swallowed a pillow. Yesterday it snowed, and it never snows in Louisiana. It was muddy but fun, so I let the boys go outside at 3:10, at 3:15 we were in the car headed to Dr.Ritch's to get stitches. He fell outside, the dog ran into him and Coco hit his head again. Luckily he only had to get glue. We came home exhausted and got in the bed early. About midnight Carter started dry heaving and throwing up bile. So needless to say I still have not slept.

  1. hello! My name is Hannah and I live in NSW, Australia. I was born with hypochondroplasia and know how it feels to be different in a good way. Coleman looks very sweet and I hope that you get this message. I'm guessing doctors might of told you this already but as Coleman gets older ( or he might of already experienced this) he will get very bad backpains and neck pains. I would advise seeing a chiropractor to help with these pains. Besides from that he is definently a strong little boy who looks like he has lots of fun. Again my name is Hannah and I am 12 years old.
    Cheers,
    Hannah

  2. Hello Hannah, it is always such a blessing to hear from others that have hypochondroplasia. Thank you for the warning about pains he might endure, he does have swayback and we are a part of Schriners or any needs we may have for that. Would you suggest to wait to go to the chiropractor until he hurts or before. We have taken him before when he was an infant with severe colic. He is also on Growth hormones. Thanks for contacting me
